In May 2020, a man named “Sam” was arrested in a street corner of Mexico City for selling “Viagra”, the Mexican version of a prescription medication. The man had used the drug to treat erectile dysfunction for five years, but had been arrested for selling the drug in the United States.
The man was charged with conspiracy, trafficking in misbranded prescription drugs and importing a large quantity of illegal drugs from the United States. He faces up to 20 years in prison and five years in prison for trafficking in misbranded prescription drugs.
Sam’s arrest comes after years of legal troubles. In December 2020, authorities seized more than $200,000 worth of misbranded prescription drugs from the United States, including Viagra and Cialis, from a home in Mexico City.
“Counterfeit drugs are often sold under false pretenses,” says U. S. Attorney Benjamin White of San Francisco, California, and several federal agencies in the Southern District of New York. “The law enforcement agencies need to take the very serious steps needed to bring a counterfeit drug to justice.”
According to a court document, Sam had sold counterfeit Viagra at the time of his arrest.
Sam faces up to 20 years in prison and five years in prison for trafficking in misbranded prescription drugs.
